Safe zone checker

This free YouTube thumbnail downloader shows every thumbnail size for any public video from a link or video ID, with a button to open or save each one. It also lists the official thumbnail and banner sizes and checks your own image against them.

How to use the YouTube thumbnail downloader

    1. Copy the address of a YouTube video. Watch links, short youtu.be links, Shorts, embed and live links all work. You can also paste only the 11 character video ID.
    2. Paste it into the box and press Get thumbnails. The images load from YouTube only after you press the button.
    3. Look through the sizes shown. Each one has the name, the pixel size, an Open button and a Download button.
    4. Press Download to save the image. If your browser blocks a direct download, the image opens in a new tab and you can save it from there.
    5. If a size says it is not available for this video, YouTube has not made that version. Try the next size down.

The tool does not download the video or its audio. It only reads the public image files that YouTube already publishes for each video. A link that is not a YouTube video link shows an error message so you can correct it.

The five thumbnail sizes you get

YouTube keeps a set of thumbnail files for each video. The tool lists all five.

    NameSize in pixelsBest use
Max resolution1280 x 720Full quality copy for reports, mock-ups and reviews
    Standard640 x 480Slightly smaller, with a 4:3 shape
High quality480 x 360Blog images and small previews
    Medium320 x 180Small cards and lists
    Default120 x 90Tiny icons only

Max resolution is the best choice in most cases. It matches the 16:9 shape that YouTube asks creators to upload. The smaller sizes can have black bars or a different crop, because some of them use a 4:3 shape. Very old or low resolution uploads may not have a max resolution file at all, and the tool then shows that the size is not available.

YouTube thumbnail size and upload rules

If you are making a thumbnail rather than saving one, these are the figures the tool lists for the youtube thumbnail size.

    ItemThumbnailChannel banner
    Recommended size1280 x 720 pixels2560 x 1440 pixels
    Minimum width640 pixels2048 pixels
    Aspect ratio16:916:9
    Maximum file size2 MB6 MB
Safe areaKeep text inside the margins1546 x 423 pixels

The thumbnail file types are JPG, PNG or GIF. For the youtube banner size, upload 2560 x 1440 and keep logos and text inside the 1546 x 423 safe area. The banner is cropped differently on phones, tablets, desktop and TVs, and only that centre area is shown on every device.

If your thumbnail is over 2 MB, convert a PNG to a smaller JPG with the PNG to JPG Converter, then check it again here.

How to use the safe zone checker

    1. Scroll to the safe zone checker and choose Check as: video thumbnail or channel banner.
    2. Drop your image onto the upload box. It is checked in your browser and never uploaded.
    3. Read the preview. For a thumbnail, the green box shows where text and faces should stay. The red box in the bottom right corner is where YouTube places the video length badge.
    4. For a banner, the green box is the 1546 x 423 safe area that shows on every device. The blue band is the width shown on desktop and the amber box is the tablet view.
    5. Read the checks underneath. They compare your image size, aspect ratio, file size and file type with the limits above and mark each as good, a warning or a problem.

The preview crops your image to 16:9 to show it as YouTube will. If the aspect ratio check shows a warning, resize the image or change the crop before you upload.

Thumbnail design tips that hold up

A thumbnail is shown very small, often smaller than a postage stamp on a phone. Design for that. Use one clear subject, large readable text of a few words and strong contrast between the text and the background. Faces with a clear expression work well, but only if they fit the video.

Keep the bottom right corner free of key content because the duration badge covers it. Check the image at a small size before you upload. If you cannot read it at a glance, shorten the text.

Make the thumbnail match the video. A thumbnail that promises something the video does not deliver can lead to people leaving early and can also break YouTube rules on misleading content. Test two or three designs over time and keep notes on which one viewers respond to.

Thumbnails work best as part of a wider video plan. If you want help with titles, scripts and filming, see our video production services, and for reaching new viewers through paid campaigns, see our YouTube advertising services.

    Common thumbnail and banner mistakes

Most upload problems come from the same few causes. The first is a wrong shape. A 4:3 image uploaded as a thumbnail is cropped or shown with bars, so always work at 16:9. The second is text that is too small. If the words cannot be read on a phone screen, they do no work, so use fewer and larger words.

The third is a banner with the logo placed in the corners. Only the centre 1546 x 423 pixel area shows on every device, so a logo near an edge can be cut off on a phone or a TV. The fourth is a file over the size limit, which YouTube rejects. Export a JPG at a lower quality if needed. The last is a blurry image made by enlarging a small file. Start at the full 1280 x 720 or 2560 x 1440 size and export from there.

    Using other channels' thumbnails responsibly

A thumbnail is a copyrighted image owned by the person who made it. Downloading one to study layouts, check your own videos, build a review sheet or create a mock-up is a normal part of research. Using someone else's thumbnail in your own video, advert or product without permission can break copyright rules. When in doubt, ask the owner or make your own image.

For your own channel, the tool is useful for saving a copy of a thumbnail you made but lost the source file for. Download the max resolution file and keep it with your project files. This page gives general information and is not legal advice.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best YouTube thumbnail size?

The recommended size is 1280 x 720 pixels, a 16:9 shape, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The file can be up to 2 MB in JPG, PNG or GIF format. Using the full size keeps the image sharp on large screens and TVs.

What is the YouTube banner size?

Upload your channel banner at 2560 x 1440 pixels, with a maximum file size of 6 MB. Keep text and logos inside the 1546 x 423 pixel safe area, because that is the part shown on every device. The rest can be background.

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Paste the video link or the 11 character video ID into the tool and press Get thumbnails. Then press Download under the size you want. If your browser blocks the direct download, the image opens in a new tab so you can save it.

Why is the max resolution size not available?

YouTube does not always make a 1280 x 720 file, especially for older videos or low resolution uploads. The tool marks the size as not available for that video. Use the Standard or High quality size instead.

Does it work for Shorts and live streams?

Yes. Shorts, embed, watch, youtu.be and live links are all accepted, and so is the bare video ID. Each of these points to a video ID, and the thumbnails are fetched using that ID.

    Is the thumbnail checker private?

Yes. Your image is checked in your browser and is not uploaded. The thumbnail downloader loads images from YouTube only after you press the button, and it does not ask for an account or collect personal details.

    Can I reuse a thumbnail I download?

Only if you own it or have permission. Thumbnails belong to the people who made them. Downloading one for research or a mock-up is common, but using it in your own content could break copyright rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
